Abstract

The term "Publish or Perish" is typically used to connote a black and white or binary idea that if you don't publish papers of scholarly merit (and in prestigious journals), you can expect your scientific career to take a nose dive. But today, Publish or Perish has many more shades of grey, as major changes in publishing ecosystems create dynamic waves across the academic landscape. In fact, with so many changes in journal publishing, including the advent of online journals, so called "predatory" journals, and other places to publish scientific work, it may be hard to keep up, and identify and crystallize what fundamental issues young scientists should focus on as they embark on their careers. In this all-star panel, we will discuss topics in publishing that are relevant to Young Scientists including the changing perspective on Journal Impact Factor, transparency in the review process, reputation management and amplification for scientists as it relates to publishing, and how changes in publishing are impacting science and scholarship itself.
