Diversity and Merits in Science (2023) - Martin Chalfie, Emmanuelle Charpentier, Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, Rasha Shraim, Marwa Shumo, Harold E. Varmus; Moderator: Nkechi Madubuko

Abstract

The 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting opens with a panel discussion on "Diversity and Merits in Science".

The panel aims to explore whether every talented scientist, regardless of their heritage, gender, socio-economic background, or country of origin, has equal access and support. Additionally, the discussion delves into whether the merits system adequately addresses biases and unequal opportunities in the scientific world.

The audience is encouraged to actively participate in the discussion using the Mentimeter voting tool.

The panel will also explore the Lindau Guideline's goals 7 and 8, which call for a change of reward systems as well as more diversity and inclusion.

This opening debate serves as a catalyst for further discussions during the following week, and in the related workshops.
