Embryonal Carcinoma/Stem Cell Story (2023) - Sir Martin J. Evans; Introduction: Klas Kärre

Abstract

Embryonic Stem Cells (ES) from mouse embryos and subsequently isolated from human and other species as well as those generated by direct dedifferentiation of adult cells (IPS) have and are having a considerable impact on understanding of development, cell differentiation and of genetic function. They have also opened prospects of cellular therapies and of regenerative medicine.

In this talk I shall tell my personal account of the road to their discovery, from the origin as a tumour stem cell (embryonal carcinoma) isolation from tumours into tissue culture, to normal cells isolated from embryos; and their use in genetic manipulation of mice; with a few final comments for the future of cellular therapies.
