Abstract

Research aims to increase human goods and these include health, well-being, prosperity, and many other components of what humans need to lead full and flourishing lives. These different goods, however, do not always align: sometimes, getting more of one means risking another. How should we decide which human goods are more important, and which can be risked, when we make decisions about the sort of future we want science to help steer us into? And who should be making these decisions in the first place?

This session is hosted by the Fondation Brocher, a research foundation where scientists, ethicists, and lawyers come together to reflect on the ethical, legal, and social dimensions of medicine and health policy, and to wrestle with exactly these kinds of questions. The session will bring together Professor Samia Hurst, MD, bioethicist and member of the Fondation Brocher Scientific Committee, a Nobel Laureate, and a Young Scientist.
