Abstract

In the face of significant global challenges, the Partner Breakfast convenes Nobel Laureates, Young Scientists, and industry leaders to explore how scientific knowledge can be transformed into tangible societal benefits. While scientific expertise is indispensable, moving from theoretical insight to real-world impact is often difficult. Under the theme “From Theory to Practice: Leveraging Science for Societal Benefit,” the session will highlight successful technological implementations from all panelists, with a particular focus on optics and photonics, while also addressing the challenges encountered and the strategies used to overcome them.

For example, advanced ophthalmic imaging and surgical visualization systems are reshaping eye care by enabling earlier diagnosis and more precise treatment of diseases such as cataracts and retinal disorders. In the life sciences, cutting-edge super-resolution and confocal microscopy platforms allow researchers to observe cellular and subcellular structures at nanoscopic scales, driving breakthroughs in biology and medicine. In semiconductor manufacturing, high-precision optical lithography and metrology systems are essential for producing ever-smaller and more powerful microchips, which underpin modern communication, computing, and sensing technologies. Building on such examples, the discussion will offer concrete guidance to Young Scientists on how to translate their research into practice and will outline best practices for maximizing the societal impact of scientific work.
