Abstract

In this presentation, I will discuss the central role of causality in econometrics. I will make the case that despite the recent increase in the explicit use of causal language, causality was, sometimes explicitly and sometimes implicitly, the goal of much econometric research from the 1930s onward. I will discuss the evaluation of the concepts over time up to the credibility revolution. I will end with discussing some current challenges in research on causality.
