Abstract

The opening panel revolves around some of the fundamental questions affecting research and innovation in today's world. They include, but are not limited to: Which are the links between curiosity-driven research, innovation, and prosperity? Are the drivers of successful basic research different in US, Europe, and China? How do societal values and governance models influence innovation? Do the tripolar powers look differently at AI regulation, and what does this mean for innovation? In which ways can public policies best support research and innovation? And what are the long-run consequences of the current shift from global cooperation to tripolar competition in research?
