Elizabeth H. Blackburn & Martin Chalfie (2018) - Thoughts on Improving Science, Individually and More Generally

Abstract

We all want to do the best science we can. In this session we want to discuss ideas (particularly your ideas) about what changes you, the younger scientists, feel will make your individual science more fulfilling and will help build a more inclusive, cooperative scientific community. In the framework of the broad questions: What research question(s) should I pursue (for example, specialized or interdisciplinary)? How do we ensure inclusiveness and protect science colleagues from (sometimes unintended) bias - focused questions for discussion could include: how do you ensure you find the postdoc position best for you? How can preprint archives and other sharing modes be used to improve scientific communication? Perhaps this Agora will even generate from you – the younger Lindau scientists - a collective statement of your vision and hopes for science’s future.
